News about Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020

October 19, 2020

After a wait of several months I was really pleased to be told that ' Winter tranquillity - River Brathay’ has been Highly Commended by the Judges in the Black and White category of the Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020. It will be published amongst about 180 pictures in the Awards book and appear at the London exhibition. It is now available as a Limited Edition print, there will be only 25 made.

It was one of three to be Highly Commended in this category with the runner up and winner getting the chocolates! I read in the summer that there had been more than 27000 images entered in all categories. It was the only one of my 20 entries not to have been from the West Country, taken when I was on a short holiday with my daughter Josie last November. She is the figure on the right hand edge of the picture. I had 2 other entries shortlisted, Orcombe Point's Geoneedle with the Milky Way and a misty dawn scene at Colmer’s Hill, but they didn’t progress.

The exhibition will be at London Bridge station from 16th November 2020 until the 12th February 2021.

The picture is a stitch of 6 vertical frames using a nodal slide, with 2 staggered ND graduated filters and was intentionally underexposed by 1.5 stops to ensure that I held detail in the sun which was breaking through the clouds. The full resolution file is over 20000 pixels wide, so would easily print to 1.8m wide.
